So, since I've been on a Juicing kick this week, my mind has been on that a lot. Of course, my mind is often also on Weetzie Bat (it's an obsession, I know), so, naturally, the two came together.
As of this moment, I'm post-lunch-juice, considering a lunch-dessert juice of just apples and carrots. I'm not hungry, I'm just craving extras, like I would normally do with regular food.
Anyway, I haven't tried these out, but if Weetzie Bat and her family had their favorite drinks, these are what I think they'd be:
Weetzie Bat
Sweet and pretty!
Weetzie would want something that was delicious, crazy-nuclear-colorful, and just happened to also be wonderfully healthy.
So, for flavor, we'd go with apples and either grapes or pineapple, or other sweet fruit. For color, some strips of beets. For health, a handful of something packed with nutrients, like kale or spinach. So, I give you...
The Weetzie:
2 sweet apples
1 bunch of grapes
2 sticks of sliced pineapple
1 slice ripe beet
1 handful kale, spinach, or collards
optional: 1/2 Asian pear, large chunk of watermelon, or
My Secret Agent Lover Man
Powerful and Practical- with a kick!
My Secret Agent Lover Man would want something that would give him energy and a boost of nutrients. I imagine a sort of Mean Green Machine drink, with lots of leafy, vitamin-rich greens, and a knob of ginger for a tasty zing. When Weetzie made if for him, she'd probably use apples as a base, to make sure it tasted good for him.
The Secret Agent:
1 apple
1 bunch spinach
1 bunch kale
1/2 cup broccoli
1 stick celery
1/2 bunch watercress
1/2 cucumber
1 knob of ginger
optional: 1/2 lemon and a few sprigs of parsley or some wheatgrass
Cherokee Bat
I think Cherokee would love something that tasted good, like her mother, but was also a little practical, like her father. I see her wanting something very simple and classic, and very natural and earthy. Of course, I see the ultimate classic for her, then: apples and carrots. Perhaps with a zing of ginger like her dad, too?
The Cherokee:
2 sweet apples
2-3 carrots
1 knob of ginger
optional: 1 orange, tangerine, or 1/2 pear
Witch Baby
Lily would want something that represented her and the way she feels/likes to represent herself. Something sweet, but also bitter. Something dark, probably super dark purple, because she likes to feel intimidating and different. I don't think she'd care much as tall about health benefits, so it'd be all about the color-- beets and carrots for that-- and flavor-- sweet apples and pineapple, with spinach and watercress for a bitter bite.
The Witch:
1 green apple
1 carrot
1 bunch grapes
2 slices pineapple
1 big bunch spinach
1 bunch watercress
1/4 grapefruit
2 slices beets
optional: 1 kiwi or 1/2 pear
Anyone have any ideas for Duck and Dirk?
I suppose if I went back and reread Baby BeBop, it'd probably come to me. Dirk would probably be a mix of Weetzie and My Secret Agent Lover Man, and Duck might be more like Cherokees and Weetzies... hm....

Worlds of Taste {4} :: Ecstasia
Worlds of Taste
Food in the world of Francesca Lia Block
Part 4 :: Ecstasia
(Francesca Lia Block, 1993)
Ecstasia is one of FLB's longer novels. It's a rich, complex story involving the lives of a group of friends in a sort of magical, post-apocoliptic LA, where only the young live above ground, dancing and twirling through a life of sweets and liquors and music and colors, while the old-- ashamed of their age-- go Underground to live out the rest of their lives in a haze of drugs and/or death. Those who choose neither chance the dessert around the city, while some find solace in the hallucinogenic drugs the Underworld has to offer.
The world is vivid and rich, and while I had trouble getting through it the first time (it's more dense than her others, and takes a little longer) it is so beautiful it's hard to forget.
I'd actually read the sequel first (Primavera) and got through it easier, but they're both so wonderful it doesn't even matter. Lovely writing, lush descriptions. Most of the descriptions show food in it's relation to luxury/pleasure. The youth Above eat and drink to celebrate life, but to the main characters it eventually feels shallow and fleeting. I wasn't sure how these descriptions felt, when here out of context, but they still hold that sort of... cynical...longing tone, which I think is interesting.
I felt the words should be dark and glittering, like stars dancing.
As I was going through the text, I felt like the words should be thick, black, dreamy. And the food of Elysia-- cakes, candy, sugar, champagne-- would be shades of pink, while the food of the dessert-- fruits, vegetables (life)-- would be their own appropriate colors..
"...where a mechanical doll with clocks set in her eye sockets served fluorescent drinks." (5)
"Huge oval mirrors in frames of silver roses reflected the tapestry cushions and the urns holding candy,..." (5)
"..swallowing the chocolate-mint liqueur from a bottle, licking his lips." (6)
"...to paint herself like an opal, eat cakes, to dance all day." (8)
"'He says he's addicted to Elysia. To all the sugar-things. He's a sugar-head,' the girl said." (10)
"The water will shine over their bodies, will fill their mouths. They will lose themselves in flowers and eat fruits that drop into their hands." (13)
"'Knocking myself against those sparkling glass windows to get inside to the champagne and the champagne-colored light.'" (15)
"Your father and I drank plum liqueur, and we watched the fireworks..." (18)
"You taste better than all the wines. You taste like crystal nectar. And you glow like wine in a glass." (27)
"Some people dressed in frilled baby costumes drank alcohol from nippled bottles." (31)
"This is the taste of longing-- like pomegranate. A thin film of translucent sweet coating the tiny, hard, white cores." (36)
"...as he drank from a big bottle of raspberry liqueur, thick with fruit." (44)
"'We could go eat or dance or get a drink. Dessert? Everything?'" (44)
"Lily ordered angel hair pasta, summer squash soup, persimmon salad, strawberry shortcake, a champagne cocktail.
'You know how to order,' he said. 'Most girls I know seem scared of food.'" (45)
"Calliope took the cake layers out of the oven and began to spread them with jam." (52)
"'Does she eat enough?' His sister was swirling the pale chocolate cream onto the cake." (53)
"Lily pour two glasses of water from a carafe. The candle flames reflected in them." (56)
"Paul walked by eating fluorescent candy." (58)
"We would drink the coffee
swallow it all up
until the night was gone
leaving bare white dawn
the bare white cup..." (66)
"...where couples sat eating cake, drinking champagne, pouring champagne on their cake." (74)
"Some pretty stuff for a while, some sweet stuff, some spirits in a bottle..." (98)
"...veiled women dancing, lynx cats striding, reclining men lifting flasks of nectar to their lips." (98)
"If only I could take away the bottle that stains your lips. You say I am your wine. Let me be your wine." (99)
"...Paul's eyes across the table, cool, starry as the eyes of the luminous, looming dolls, while he ate his cake and ice cream. 'What happened to Rafe-sugar-head?' Paul asked one afternoon when Rafe ordered only sparkling water. 'I'm trying to quit.'" (110)
"Paul pushed aside the piece of layer cake drowning in chocolate ice cream." (111)
"They had eaten pastries for dinner..." (121)
"They don't want to give up all the circuses and cakes to work. To live." (132)
"He reached into his pockets and took out a handful of candy stars. The lights seemed to flash to the beat of the music that drifted up through the streets as Paul stood, eating his candy."
"Only when I drank the wine they slipped me at the long gold table did I forget. We all forgot." (141)
"...I was addicted to the glass garden and the fountains and the platters of iced rum cakes." (143)
"'Candy?'
Calliope reached into her pocket and took out some of the chocolate wafers Dionisio loved. The little girl popped them into her mouth and closed her eyes for a moment, like an addict who has finally retrieved the drug. She skipped away singing to herself, 'Butterfly flutter by, sweet meat meat sweet, sugar pie, pie in the sky.'" (153)
"Will you grow up gnawing on candy, addicted to the sweetness you savored in your mother's milk?" (153)
"...past a bar where people dressed in kimonos and high black wigs sat on pillows drinking sake and staring out the glass walls..." (154)
"And he was cracking open the blood-colored husk of the orb. And he was prying apart the insides. And he was ripping the small, bright kernel from the honeycomb sheath..." (160)
"He only needs to hold out his hand the the plums will drop-- the color of his curls and the flavor of his lips." (160)
"This sky of leaves, plums, peaches, grapes, apple blossoms." (161)
"...he would take me with him to get ice cream and give me dolls..." (165)
"I will.... eat the cakes and drink the champagne and go below when I am supposed to go below." (168)
"...hallucinations of gaping-mouthed plums are taunting him." (172)
"Dionisio and Paul will feed her wine and jams and sugared violets." (173)
"This man has dark curls and smells of fruit and smoke." (175)
"...mechanical dolls serving parfaits and exotic drinks with parasols to the beautiful children." (188)
"They were always hungry for fruits, vegetables, grains, thirsty for fountains, pools, lakes..." (192)

Food in the world of Francesca Lia Block
Part Three :: Weetzie Bat
(Francesca Lia Block, 1989)
(these page numbers are from the Dangerous Angels edition, published 1998)
The one that started it all.
Though this isn't the first FLB book I read, it is the one that got me hooked. The descriptions of (and just using) food are delectable, and everything is just kind of delightful. And it's pretty much constant. Every page has food. This post will probably be dangerously close to copyright infringement because there's food on like every page! I'm surprised this wasn't the first post I ever wrote.
One of the things I love about it is that a good amount of the food is healthy food. At some point in her life, Weetzie becomes a vegetarian, but throughout her life, she doesn't eat crazy terrible food. There are hamburgers and ice cream and lots of wine and champagne, but there's also sushi and veggies and avocado sandwiches. I mean...yum, people!

I felt the the text here should be bright and bubbly, like Weetzie. If only I could make it bubbly...
"They drank beers or bright-colored canned Club drinks in Jerry and told each other how cool they were." [5]
"After the shows, sweaty and shaky, they went to Oki Dogs for a burrito." [5]
"...they... had strawberry sundaes with marshmallow topping at Schwab's, or went to the beach. ...got tan and ate cheese-and-avocado sandwiches on whole-wheat bread and slept on the beach." [5]
"...a sweet, powdery old lady who baked tiny, white, sugar-coated pastries for them..." [6]
"...they gave him pizza pie for dinner instead of that weird meat Weetzie's mom, Brandy-Lynn, tried to dish out..." [6]
"Dirk poured rum from the little bottle he kept in his jacket pocket into the Cokes." [7]
"They went to Canter's for bagels, which comforted Weetzie because she had teethed on Canter's bagels when she was a baby. While they ate, a cart of pickles wheeled by..." [10]
"Weetzie's dad ordered two turkey platters with mashed potatoes, gravy, and cranberry sauce. The white-haired waitress served them canned fruit cocktail, sugar-glazed rolls, and pink sherbet before the turkey came. They had apple pie afterward.
'Does your mother ever feed you?" Weetzie's dad asked between the fruit and the rolls." [12]
"They drank tequila sunrises and bathed in gin." [14]
"...they had to walk up nine flights in the dark carrying the lox and bagels and cream cheese and bonbons..." [16]
"...Weetzie and Dirk brought Grandma Fifi tomatoes from the Fairfax market and prune pastries from Canter's." [17]
"...when Dirk came up and offered to buy him a beer." [22]
"They had barbecues and ate hamburgers and watermelon." [23]
"They all lived together and wore red and ate plantain and black beans, or wonton soup and fortune cookies... They took her to the Kingston 12 to hear reggae music and drink Red Stripe Jamaican beer..." [25]
"'Coffee, black,' he said. It was a Sunday morning at Duke's." [26]
"...pulled a bottle of pink champagne out of his trench coat." [28]
"A kiss about apple pie a la mode with the vanilla creaminess melting in the pie heat. A kiss about chocolate when you haven't eaten chocolate in a year.... trailing pink clouds when you drive down the Strip sizzling with champagne...." [29]
"...in the land of skating hamburgers and flying toupees and Jah-Love blonde Indians." [30]
"...and were eating canned smoked oysters and drinking red wine from real glasses..." [33]
"His eyes looked like glasses of gin."
"Weetzie felt as if she were turning into steam and milk and honey." [36]
"At Noshi, they ordered hamachi, anago, maguro, ebi, tako, kappa maki, and Kirin beer. They were buzzing from the beer and from the burning neon-green wasabe and the pink ginger and from the massive protein doze of sushi." [36]
"She felt like... an Easter basket of pastel chocolate-malt eggs and solid-milk-chocolate bunnies, and yellow daffodils and dollhouse-sized jelly-bean eggs." [38]
"...bitterness was like a liqueur burning in her throat and dripping down slowly into her heart." [41]
"...Weetzie brought him more aspirin and vitamin C, and made him drink grapefruit juice and herb tea..." [45]
"...and being terrorized by Cherokee, and eating up all of Duck's Fig Newtons..." [50]
"They drove around in the T-bird eating ice cream and filming." [53]
"...they went to Chinatown and ate squid and broccoli and hot-and-sour soup. Then they wandered through the angled streets that smelled meaty and peppery." [55]
"...on the way home, he bought cannolis in Little Italy for all of them." [55]
"Charlie took them out for Italian food and French food and Jewish deli and lobster. He bought them strawberries and whipped cream... among the peachy marble columns..." [56]
"Now they were in Sylvia's, eating eggs and grits and biscuits and sweet potato pie.
'I'm okay,' Charlie said. He was on his third cup of coffee and hadn't touched his breakfast." [56]
"We have pancakes at Duke's, and dinners at the Tick Tock Tea Room." [57]
"...and have a Schwab's and have a hamburger and a milkshake for dinner, and I'd swivel around on the barstool reading Wonder Woman comics..." [60]
"She kissed him and packed bags and picnic baskets and thermoses and Spiderman lunch pails full of bagels, string cheese, chocolate-chip cookies, milk, apples, and carrot sticks." [64]
"He stopped at McDonald's but kept thinking of the cows and ordered a Filet o' Fish and a milkshake." [65]
"...he smelled the cold, bread baking, gasoline." [65]
"...looking at the faces of the men eating ice cream as if it would ease some pain." [66]
"Everyone looked drunk under the old Coca-Cola signs in the rooms that smelled of meat, onions, and sawdust. ... how they had held hands the whole time they ate their hamburgers..." [66]
"They stopped for all-you-can-eat pea soup..." [68]
"...they would take a trip to Mexico and drink tequila and lie in the sun..." [68]
"That night, they all ate linguini and clam sauce that My Secret Agent Lover Man made, and they drank wine and lit the candles." [69]

Be Like Weetzie Bat : Wear it.
Number 21 :: Wear What You Want, Wear What You Love!
| Wildfox photo shoot captures Weetzie's glamorous style |
Weetzie is NEVER afraid to wear whatever she wants. When she finds something she likes, she goes for it and doesn't care what other people think of her. This is the case with many FLB characters and it should be the case for you!
For starters, get clothes you like. I love thrift stores (goodwill, etc) and outlet style stores (Ross, Marshals, TX Maxx, etc), and even the dollar store can have adorable purses and bits of plastic jewelry. Give yourself a certain spending limit each time and get a few things that make you excited when you see them. Things don't have to match when you buy them (although you might want to avoid something that you love but don't think you'd ever actually wear), just go for what you love.
"I was wearing my shiny leotard and my wraparound skirt, my cork sandals and Jontue perfume and Bonne Bell lip gloss." -Wasteland
Native headdresses, Indian saris, hello kitty jewelry, stick-on body art, glitter tiaras, star shaped barrettes and hair bands, studded belts, rainbow suspenders, and so much more! Grab the cute little things that catch your eye (which never has to be expensive if you're in the right place) and top off all your outfits with bands of bracelets, thick colorful belts, military hats, or fingerless gloves!
Find some style icons. I love Zooey Deschanel, she's bright and pretty and whimsical, and I pretty much always love what she's wearing and how she looks. Find someone who has a fashion sense you like, and look to that person(s) for inspiration!
"Perdita is wearing antique lace, and feathers in her hair. She is wearing strands of beads, a plastic necklace filled with green glow-in-the-dark liquid and a glass bird ring. She is dancing by herself when she see me..." -The Hanged Man
Go for fashion. I'm not a believer that everything has to match. But, it's easiest to make things look great when there's at least some kind of main theme. So try keeping certain colors together in your outfit (I really like green, purple, brown, black, and grey, and they happen a lot in my clothes lately) so that even if it's pretty wild, it at least has a sense of...flow.
You never have to pick one style. If you feel classic one day, go for it. Punky the next? Go go go! Bright and trendy the next? Yes! Sporty chic the next? Just do it!
Even if you never feel like dressing up and feel best when "dressing down" or just going around in sport suits or jeans and a tee shirt, just go for it! As long as you feel good in what you're wearing, that's what's important.
Don't think about other people. Dress for you, no one else.
If you're confident in what you're wearing, your much less likely to get strange looks from the people around you. You probably don't like what they're wearing that much, why should it matter if they like what you're wearing?
You love it, and that's what's important.
You love it, and that's what's important.
"Under the pink Harlequin sunglasses, strawberry lipstick, earrings dangling charms, and sugar-frosted eye shadow she was really almost beautiful. Sometimes she wore Levi's with white suede fringe sewn down the legs and a feathered Indian headdress, sometimes old fifties' taffeta dresses covered with poetry written in glitter, or dresses made of kids' sheets printed with pink piglets or Disney characters."

Finding Light when it's Dark Inside
sit outside in the sunshine, even on a cold day. close your eyes and let the sun soak into your skin.
sip hot tea by the window. don't think about yourself, just watch the world outside. watch the sky. watch the trees.
go for a walk when it's bright out. think of songs you love and pretend there's nothing else in the world. hum.
drink iced hibiscus green tea with honey. lie on the floor and watch sunlight on the walls. daydream.
light candles in the darkness and breathe in their warmth. remember quiet times of calmness and peace and simple joy.
lie on the carpet or bed and listen to quiet, beautiful music. let it seep into you and wash the rest of the world away.
dance to music that makes you feel alive. close your eyes and see the light of the music pulse as your body moves.
remember the sun. remember the light. remember that things always get better. not right away, but eventually.
find your light. hold on to it. don't let go.

Number 18 :: Be Glamorous

— (How to (Un)cage a Girl)
*Be daring. Glamorous women are strong and independent and go for what they want. Never be afraid to try new things, go to new places, and explore the world around you in whatever way you please.
* Accessorize. When you see a classic, glamorous person, their style is almost always punctuated with accessories. Audrey's cigarette holder, Marylin's diamonds. Studded earrings, gaudy jewelry, elegant gloves, delicate tiaras. Find things you love. Wear them all the time.
*Feel beautiful. This has nothing to do with looks. In my RLS Bible, I made a list of all the things I did that made me feel beautiful. From having smooth legs and wearing strappy pumps, to laughing and just being happy, or even being a loving person. Do things that make you feel like a beautiful person, inside and out.
*Be glamorous to others. Polite. Gracious. Thankful. Helpful. Loving. Show others the best you at all times.
"The next night I went back to the sea dressed in 1950s silk travel scarves – Paris with the Eiffel tower and ladies in hats and pink poodles, Venice with bronze horses and gondoliers, New York in celestial blue and silver. I brought candles and lit the candles, all the candles, in a circle around the lifeguard stand and put a tape in my boom box. I came down the ramp with the sea lapping at my feet and the air like a scarf of warm silk and the stars like my tiara. "

Paper Cranes & Butterflies
Current Mood: Pensive
Current Weetzie Read(s): Stargirl & Prozac Nation
Have become obsessed with origami.
Pink & white lotus blossoms on every table.
Multi-colored cranes hanging from the ceiling.
Patterned butterflies arching through hallway, tacked like beautiful experiments of spring .
The two books I'm currently reading reflect my two different (consistent) moods.
Prozac Nation. Wild. Uncontrollable. Desperate. Insatiably chaotic.
Stargirl. Light. Airy. Bizarre. Ethereal.
The two switch, endlessly, battling for the chance to win over my quiet, empty life.
"She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl. We did not know what to make of her.
In our minds we tried to pin her to a corkboard like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew." Stargirl

Server Girl :: the big question
I've been a waitress (server) for going on seven months now. I love working at a sushi place, but I really hate the job. What I (think I) really want is a boring job where I have a tiny desk, fetch somebodies coffee five times a day, answer the phone and file paperwork. A job where I get paid by the year, not by the customer.
There are good nights as server; nights like tonight when I work six hours and make about $120, which comes out to $20 an hour-- more than I would as an office assistant. But most nights this isn't the case. Most days I make minimum wage or less, and generally speaking I make $50 per shift. The worst days are the ones where I work my ass off but customers still only pay me one or two dollars per person.

But what's bugging me most isn't the money. It isn't (completely) the fact that I've been broke for a full three months now. It isn't that my boss keeps cutting my hours so in a few weeks I'm going to be struggling to make ends meet.
It's that at this job it seems that I'm pretty much always miserable. I like the other servers I work with, I like that--other than putting up with crazy people and the like-- my job is mostly easy. And I even like the food where I work, even though I don't get to eat it more than once a month.
I keep telling myself that I'll be better. That I'll spend more time on my Bible and find the inspiration I need to do all the things I want to. I tell myself I'll clean and finish editing my novel and create things and be happier. That I'll be more active and treat myself to things once and awhile and I'll do more things that I love and want to do.
But every day I still wake up late and I still end up on the couch watching tv because nothing feels worth starting. I'm stuck in a place where nothing looks like it's going anywhere at all. This whole up-coming year feels like a great big stretch up stuck-ness, nothing like what I want it to be. Because my manager doesn't like me (for some reason she won't actually tell me) my hours continue to drop at work, and the process of finding another stupid restaurant job makes me cringe and sink even further into the couch. Because apparently real jobs don't want me, even with two degrees and a decent resume. I have applied to so many local and national companies for all kinds of work that I'm actually kind of qualified to do, and I haven't received a single call back. Not a single request for an interview. It makes everything seem so useless.
But this is a lot of me complaining, and that isn't my point. I don't want to whine and be boring.
What I've been thinking a lot about is Weetzie. For a while, Weetzie Bat was a waitress at a diner. It's where she meets My Secret Agent Lover Man. From there everything seems to pick up for her. But there isn't a note about Weetzie being unhappy during her work there. And all I can think is, How? I feel so trapped here in my post-grad going-nowhere too-qualified-but-not-qualified-enough life in the same damn town but with no money and no friends, I can't imagine Weetzie being happy during that time in her life. How did she handle it?!
Ok, ok, she's fictional. I know this. She stayed happy because that's the way she was written. Happy and optimistic and loving.
But in my (off and on) quest to live a life more like her, I've continued to make excuses on why I'm not doing it. "Because life isn't that way", I'll say. But isn't that the point? To be like Weetzie in the real world? To be like this brilliant, fun, happy character (and other FLB characters like her) in a world that is hard and boring and poor and unpleasant and unforgiving and so un-magical in day to day life? Those who see magic and love and life every day are lucky, and I want to be that way but too often I want too much and do too little.
So then I'm back to the beginning. In this place in my life, stuck in between what I was and what I'm trying so hard to be (( student->server---assistant?, content->miserable---happy?, etc)), how do I look at where I am and smile and just be happy with what's around me, instead of only waiting for the things I'm searching for? Or just be happy with where I am while I try to create the life I want?
How do I buck up and actually live my life instead of just waiting for it?
I know I need to change myself before I can change my life. But how do I get to that point?
How would she?
There are good nights as server; nights like tonight when I work six hours and make about $120, which comes out to $20 an hour-- more than I would as an office assistant. But most nights this isn't the case. Most days I make minimum wage or less, and generally speaking I make $50 per shift. The worst days are the ones where I work my ass off but customers still only pay me one or two dollars per person.
(If you weren't aware, servers don't actually get paid by the restaurants they work at. Not usually anyway. I get paid about a dollar an hour by the restaurant-- after taxes-- my boyfriend doesn't get any money from his. It all goes to taxes, tips are all we get to keep. For the majority of servers, the individual customers are the ones that actually pay the server. What you leave as tip is all we get paid for serving you. Which is why 10% is never an acceptable tip, unless you got your food to go. Soap box over.)
It's that at this job it seems that I'm pretty much always miserable. I like the other servers I work with, I like that--other than putting up with crazy people and the like-- my job is mostly easy. And I even like the food where I work, even though I don't get to eat it more than once a month.
But I hate that this is what I'm doing.
I'm not traveling, I'm not moving up any corporate ladder, I'm not creating things or doing something interesting, I'm not building my future or living in my present, and I'm not doing something I love.
I'm working a crappy job just to get by and I'm not even doing things I like in my spare time. All I ever do is wait to go back to work so I can get more money to pay my bills and buy groceries. I watch tv, I pour over job sites for a real job, and I wish I had money so I could replace my five year old jeans or fix our car.
I've tried thinking of creative things I could do to make money, but nothing ever pans out, even when it seems like a good idea in the beginning.

Easy Ways to Decorate Any Room ::
~ Find fake flowers and use them any way you can. Bouquet them in cheap glass vases, Hang them in wreaths from the wall or over the door, pin/glue them to shelves, tables, or frames.
-- Dan picked up a basket of fake fall flowers from the recycling pile at our building a while back, and I spritzed them with fabreeze before pulling them all out of the ugly basket and putting them in vases all over the apartment. Now, whenever I need a burst of lovely, I spritz them with pumpkin spice room spray and position them in lovely places on tables and shelves.
~ Make friends with the local thrift store, or even just the dollar store!
-- These are great places to pick up little decorating items, especially vases, holiday bits and pieces (snow globes, statuettes, window clings, etc), those fake flowers I suggested, plus basic decor like wreathes, place mats, etc! Not to mention candles, which are definitely a must and should be everywhere. :)

~Reuse everything you possibly can.
-- I'm a sucker for glass food jars, whether it's giant mason jars or tiny soup base jars, everything is used, cleaned and re-used as cups, vases, or new homes for homemade sauces, which usually then adorn my kitchen counters. Then there's old books, stacked and arranged, empty/clean wine bottles as vases/candlestick holders, clear vases filled with water and tea light candles, or old records as wall art!
~Don't be afraid of trying things out; you can always redo it later!
-- Rearrange your furniture, hang up frames (for a stingy apartment, Command Hooks work wonders!) and place candles. vases, or frames everywhere. You can always move them back later if you don't like it. One easy fix for this too, is to try some Wall Decals! Many are really affordable, and you can take them down whenever you want!
~Use your imagination!
"…Our apartment is teeny and you have to walk up eight flights to get to it but we have a fireplace with carved angels, a leopard-print chaise lounge, Maxfield Parrish prints of nymphs in classical sunset gardens, pink-damask drapes and silk roses in platform shoes from the 40’s and 70’s that Izzy has collected." ~Dragons in Manhattan

"We live in a house with a tower. The man who built it was a toymaker; he carved the faces over the fireplace and planted the vines that cover the walls and the oleander in the garden. It smells like cedar and eucalyptus, smoke and lavender in this house. There are things everywhere: books, shells, fossils, dried flowers, bird skulls, the antique wooden cherub, the miniature stone sphinx, ivory monkeys, the brass menorah, china dolls with little teeth, the ancient Roman tear vessel that came from a tomb—that looks like a fossilized tear itself; the three bronze women stand erect. My father made them before I was born." ~The Hanged Man
"Fifi’s house was a Hollywood cottage with one of those fairy-tale roofs that look like someone has spilled silly sand. There were roses and lemon trees in the garden and two bedrooms inside the house—one painted rose and the other aqua. The house was filled with plaster Jesus statues, glass butterfly ashtrays, paintings of clowns, and many kinds of coasters. Weetzie and Dirk had always loved the house. " ~Weetzie Bat

Way to Be Like Weetzie,
Number Fifteen :: Embrace Cultures
Weetzie Bat never shies away from something new or exotic, and she has so many friends of different nationalities and cultures and enjoys so many different kinds of activities and fashions that her life is full of fun and beautiful diversity!
((I don't have many quotes for this one right now, since all of my WB books except Necklace of Kisses are MIA, but I'll add more later.))
Easy Ways To Explore Different Cultures Around You ::
~Try a new kind of restaurant
--I'll never forget the first time I tried a local (authentic) Korean restaurant. Even though I hadn't fully adjusted to the food, the experience was still amazing; korean banchan, sweet chilled cinnamon tea, and all that spicy amazing food! And I can't even begin to describe my first trip to an Ethiopian restaurant. So delicious, so exciting. Here are my recommendations for new food types :: Vietnamese (try the Pho, please!), Korean, Ethiopian (so yummy), West African, Sushi (don't you dare get a California roll!), and Dim Sum (Bao please!). If you're not sure if you have any of these in your area, check out ChowHound.com and ask around. Then get chowing! Don't forget to ask questions when there's something you don't fully understand, like "How do I eat this?" "What's this made out of?", etc.
~Go on a WikiTour
-- Start off on Wikipedia with something you like. Bollywood, Chinese Food, Salsa Music, whatever. Then follow the internal links from that cultural wonder to another. I used to do this a lot with food, especially sushi. I'd read about one kind of food, then click on a wiki-link that described another similar food, and so on and so on. You can do this with a lot of things on Wikipedia, such as music, fashion, celebrities, religions, etc. It's a great way to just soak up new cultural information.
~Ask Questions!
--When you meet someone from a different culture, don't hesitate to ask questions about their life and culture (though you might want to ask if it's okay first). Think of yourself as a cultural journalist, collecting information on their unique and wonderful lifestyle.
~Find a Festival
~Explore Music
-- Pandora and Grooveshark are great websites that let you listen to music for free. Team them up with Wikipedia or another search engine and explore different kinds of music from around the world. Experience latin beats with Salsa or Merengue, try some Japanese pop music or African rhythms.
~Do the Artsy Thing
-- Museums and galleries really are great ways to get out of the house and explore culture. This is especially true if the particular exhibit has to do with foreign history or art. Entrance is usually free or at least cheap, and on a day off from work or school it's a great way to have a relaxed day out and soak in the beauty and diversity. If you're lucky enough to live near an art/foreign/independent movie theater, stop by for a type of film you wouldn't normally watch, like a French drama or Bollywood flick.
~Celebrate a Foreign Holiday
-- I love the idea of celebrating random, foreign/different holidays, even if you aren't of that ethnicity, religion, or culture. A calender that lists different countries holidays is a great addition to your office/desk/living room, and a little research can go a long way towards a fun afternoon of cooking foreign, festive foods, listening to new cultural holiday music, and learning/exploring something new.
~ Don't be Afraid
-- Please, please, please; never be afraid of something new. I have a motto that I'll try anything at least twice. Because, to me, the first time is never really enough to fully grasp what it is you're trying. For some things (like bungee jumping) once may be enough, but for things like food, performances, music, etc, the first time is just an introduction, just a taste. To really know if you enjoy something, you have to at least try to experience it a second time, just to make sure you've fully seen (or tasted, or heard) what that thing had to offer you.

"She sat at a quiet table surrounded by red and white cat statues with one paw raised, as if swiping at prey, and wiped her hands with the warm washcloth that the very tall, surprisingly broad-shouldered Japanese waitress brought. Then Weetzie ordered miso soup, spinach with sesame, edamame, sauteed pumpkin, rice balls with umeboshi, cold soba noodles with scallions, and tofu steak. Each item came in its own small red, black, or terra-cotta bowl or dish, she at slowly with her chopsticks."

Number Six :: Be Adventurous
A Few Simple Ways to be Adventurous Every Day
~ Try something different. Whether its a new kind of food, music, or movie, just try something new!
~Say hello. Smile more at strangers and say hello to people you don't know. You don't have to have a conversation, just greet them. You'd be surprised at how much it boosts your confidence and willingness to meet new people.
~Make plans to do something crazy, even if you aren't really going to do it. Make lists of places you'd want to go on a road trip, or the things you'd do in the Bahamas.
~Take pictures of things around you that excite you or make you feel adventurous (water slides, fields of flowers, the view from a ferris wheel, hot guys/girls?)
~Search your city for a small adventure, whether it's a local museum you've never been to, a hike, or a picnic in the park.
~Don't be afraid to say "Yes" more often!
"...choose to believe in your own myth

(even if she is just pretending)

-This could actually be a lot of books, but out of my own library, I think this one captures the idea of adventure really really well. Love and sex and beauty and adventure. Beautiful and very epic.
"Sometimes she has imagined what it would be like to fly, to live in the river, to run like a horse. She has dreamed of that freedom, that power, and fears the wildness in herself that wants to live as beasts live, moved purely by need and desire. She has felt torn between the heat of her limbs and the thoughts in her mind telling her to be careful and good and always calm. "
