A Stolen Quote

Perusing through FLB's blogger, love in the time of global warming, I re-stumbled onto this quote from Alice Flaherty, and fell completely in love. I'm pasting it here, but definitely check it and more out on this (old?) blog from Francesca Lia Block. She has beautiful poetry there that is so worth reading.

“Is it too reductionist then, to suggest that a major reason for creative writing is an abstracted version of the same biological urge that causes you to cry out in sorrow or anger? Let us call it the need theory of self expression. I cry out because some primitive part of me believes that when you cry out, someone warm and helpful comes. What do I need? It is not to have those tiny babies back. They were too small for me to remember; they have vanished like soap bubbles. I have two real children now. Nor do I want to return to the sunny, uniformly lit mental life I used to have, although there are aspects of that life that I miss.

In fact, during my postpartum break, I discovered a mystery: I loved my sorrow. It was as if I had been preparing all my life for that event, that I had entered into my birthright. When I was in graduate school, my husband and I lived in an apartment over a ruined garden that had a grapevine as thick as a child’s body, coiling up the fire escape to my window. At night I could lie in bed and reach out into the dark and pluck grapes to eat. My grief was like that, as if it had given me access to a shadowy world that lies so close to this one that when I concentrated I could push my arm into it and pluck dream fruit. It is a world where beauty cannot be separated from pain, and should not be, as when a scalpel is needed to expose the exquisite organs of the belly. A pen can be a scalpel too.
I no longer know whether it is my children that I long for, or my sorrow. I have an irrational belief, left over from my sensible past, that if I tell enough people about this knot that is always pulled tight, someone somewhere will be able to loosen it. But my new self needs it always to be pulled tight. I don’t write toforget what happened; I write to remember. There are worse things in life than painful desire; one of them is to have no desire.”
Alice W. Flaherty THE MIDNIGHT DISEASE

This is from The Midnight Disease, by nueroscientist Alice Flaherty, which, of course, I had to look up. It's a [much debated] scientific look at the compulsion to write that many people feel.
Yeah, obviously I need to read it now. It sounds really neat.
And that many of the negative reviews say it was illogical and disorganized, incoherent and jargon-filled, doesn't hinder my desire to read it-- I like tangent-filled writing and psycho-babble (although it drives the editor in me so crazy) so I'm all in there.
I'll let you know how that goes...

Writing Time

So, I've always wanted to post my writing up on here, but I'm always nervous about putting work I really care about out into the internet, where it can be snatched up, twisted, and spit back out as some mutant (or even identical) version with someone else's name on it. So with my two (and a half) novels, I've avoided putting more than a few clips up for blog consumption.

Today this changes!

I've created a blog for my newest project, which is something I'm working on slowly, and more for practice and precision (and to try a new genre-- one I'm not very good at; supernatural and sexy). While I still consider this my property and very much hope no one steals it  (pretty please?), because I see this more as a project than a novel-in-the-works, I've decided to serialize it in a blog.

I'm also hoping for as much feedback as possible (even if it's only a comment or two), and other than critique forums where that's all I'd get, this seems like a good outlet.

Anyway, if you're interested, it is  (as of it's inception, but possibly not as it comes out) planned to be a story about a succubus who is kidnapped and forced into rehabilitation.
Supernatural. Sexy. Dramatic.
Maybe even the possibility of some crime solving involvement, or a sort of magical Girl Interrupted subplot.

Sound any good?
We'll find out, I guess.

If at all interested, first chapter will be up this week:

Beautiful Blogs

This isn't a full BB write-up, but I did want to give a shout-out to this (new?) blog I caught sight of in my Follower list.
It looks like she's just started out, and her blog is mostly short bits of fiction, but I loved the first one so much I copied quotes of it for my Inspiration Board (more on that when it's a little more finished).

"She wanted the right one, the key, to unlock the spill of her voice."

Doesn't that just scream Francesca Lia Block!??!
Very beautiful; I love it.
Will definitely go back for more

Beautiful Blogs :: Weetzie Lovers

Weetzie Lovers
a collection of weetzie pages

I suddenly had the urge to find other pages and posts about Weetzie Bat. When I first started this blog, these were few and far between, but a quick google search shows how the fandom has oh-so grown!
So here's a random smattering of posts that I've found in a quick search, highlighting Weetzie Bat, her style, and FLB's beautiful imagery.

Rookie :: Secret Style Icon Weetzie Bat -- a quick bio and info about WB, with fashion inspiration :)
Parfait Doll :: Style Diary: Shagri-L.A. -- an adorable little piece about Weetzie style and fashion, with quotes from the book. Very cute!
xoJANE :: How to Look Like a LA Wild Child! -- This is a neat post (with pictures!) about how the writer pulls off some Weetzie looks on a budget.
Tumblr :: Weetzie Bat tags -- I know; not a blog. But still. scroll through this and you'll find beautiful images related to Weetzie Bat, quotes to inspire you, or people's wonderful stories about their experiences with the book or characters.
Jezebel :: The Book For Girls Who Ended Up Taking A Gay Dude To Prom -- This is actually an older one (2008, the rest are 2012), and I remember reading it in the past. No pictures and about being Weetzie-like, but is a great description of the book, as well as its flaws and successes.
Pinterest :: Weetzie Bat tags -- again, not a blog. But more visual than tumblr, pinterest has a vast assortment of photos, art, fashion ideas, and just plain Weetzie-based inspiration! Great place to browse and be inspired.

Have a Weetzie post? Let me know and I'll add it to this list!

Beautiful Blogs :: carry me away

"always carried away"

A beautiful blog of snippets.
Photos (I assume from the internet)
Quotes
And simple blog entries.
Sometimes about life, love, work, or Mademoiselle Deva's personal life.
Beautiful images.
Often equally beautiful words.
I love that this blog doesn't require a lot of commitment or reading.
Flip through this scrapbook-esque collection of beauty and life.
(With several different formats to choose from)

Let's love more.

I love LOVE.
I need love.
I breathe love.

I am LOVE.
I am realistic.
I expect miracles.

I believe in magic.

It's easy to get lost,
and easy to become enamored.
Perfect for a daily dose of inspiration.

Beautiful Blogs :: gypsy life

I don't generally read coloborative blogs. Too many people to keep up with.
Gypsy Girls Guide has changed that.

With all kinds of amazing contributers, GGG is an amazing source of inspiration. (and a guaranteed way to begin a long bout of wanderlust)

It's likely that in the near future I'll be posting a lot of stuff about travel and nature and moving around.
Since our vacation I've been desperate to move (literally, not like into a new place....just did that). Consider this the beginning of that series.

With travel journals from women who travel the world, to images of far off places and little adventures closer to home. "Road tunes" to get you going, poetry and fashion to inspire, and guides/information about the world around you near and far, this site is truly an inspirational delight.

There's even food related posts, which there damn well should be. Traveling isn't true without the amazing, unique, and life-changing food you can get in new places.

If you visit (please do) make sure to stop by the Manifesto. It's awesome. I liked it so much I printed it out and used phrases throughout my Bible. I love it.

Reading the posts makes me want to just get up and go somewhere.
Anywhere.
Even if it's just another town, stopping at a strange hole-in-the-wall restaurant for lunch then wandering the streets. A day in the mountains with veggie sandwiches and hummus. A big city hotel for a night, ordering room service with the windows open and the sounds of the street filling the air. A picnic at the park with pesto pasta salad, fruits, and sweet wine in plastic cups.
I miss the freedom of having a car. Dan works so much and I'm so dependent on his car that all I do is sit around here waiting for him to get home, or to pick him up.

I want to pack up the car with lunch and just go. For a few hours or a few days, it doesn't even matter.
I read this blog and I want this bohemian lifestyle.
I want to love my life and know I can just get up and go anywhere (even if that anywhere only really includes how far a tank of gas will get me).

Read it.
Be inspired.
Go.

Beautiful Blogs :: beautiful little bukowski

I don't remember how I stumbled onto The Little Bukowski, but I wish I did, so I could repeat it with variance and find something as pretty and interesting and inspirational.

I find Little Bukowski to be light, airy, and whimsical, yet still grounded in the real world somehow. She talks about her life and the world around her. Her writing, even when it's about simple, mundane things, is pretty and sometimes even poetic.
She is really pretty, and has amazing tattoos and an adorable dog. Not to mention amazing photos with every post, usually of her, her pup, or her (past) roommates.

when the clouds come rolling in and hover quietly above my little house, i can feel their weight in my bones and it takes all the strength in the world to lift my body from bed. that's what today felt like. and it made me remember how much i used to loved calling out sick just to stay home and listen to good music. i'd waste away in bed and day dream about fancy things.
-from blog post Castles in the Air

I draw inspiration from the images of the world around her. The rooms of her home, decorated in beautiful neutrals and pinks, everything frilly and comforting. Even her bathroom is beautiful, a vast mirror and adorable clothes-things hanging from the wall, almost like decorations themselves.

I feel like i'm watching a polaroid slowly develop...like i'm holding an corner of my life and gently fanning it from coagulated liquid film into sharper images.
-from post Slowly Moving Alkaline

With every new blog I stumble onto I become more and more inspired (while, at the same time, feeling more and more bleh about my own life and how lazy I am) and as I continue to find things that I read and love, I continue to dabble in my RLS Bible, and little by little try to add to my life.

This week I'm writing: as much as possible. My manager at the restaurant apparently doesn't see the need to give me real hours, so I'm still only working two days a week. Luckily I can be broke right now, since my rent's already saved up, but if this keeps up, I'd rather be unemployed for a while, continuing this search for a crappy, entry-level position that will put me closer to where I want to be.
Till then, I have to tell myself that if I want to be a writer (which I do) then I should write.
Lets hope something comes of that.

Very Zooey

As I think I've mentioned, Zooey Deschanel is one of the my biggest inspirations (particularly from her amazing clothes and style to her adorable personality and voice).

Now, she has a Tumblr! (info via galadarling's carousel this week)
And while I don't really keep up with Tumblr, I still have plans to be a regular here.

Here's my favorite one so far:: Bestie Day

Beautiful Blogs :: the whimsical gala darling

Gala Darling invites you to play.

This is my new favorite blog.
I can't help it.

I know I'm going to be spending the next two weeks pouring over every article and podcast, taking notes and soaking everything in.

The inspiration I look for in Francesca Lia Blocks books I find in this blog, bright and pink and glittery (and also, I think, somewhat inspired by FLB).
She writes about "radical self love" and tells us to be great to ourselves and always remember to love ourselves.
It's an easy thing to forget.

But with everything from images of outfits, to ideas to be happy and beautiful, to style tips and wonderful links, Gala Darling has created a massive, amazing blog that will pull you in and capture your beauty-loving soul, encouraging your happiness and -- of course-- self-love.

You'll probably see quite a few things relating back to gala darling in the next month or so (likely beginning with my own "Self Love Bible".

With how bland and miserable I've been this past week, I'm ecstatic to find this wonderful source of inspiration and beauty.
You'll see, it's going to be fantastic.

Beautiful Blogs :: simply breakfast

I have a stomach-y condition that keeps me from really eating breakfast. Sometimes I can, but usually anything starchy, sweet, or breaded before 11 am makes my stomach go all gurgle-y.

That said, I LOVE breakfast foods.
Especially the way it tends to look.

And it seems like Jen Causey at simply breakfast has a similar (and more productive) appreciation for the most important meal of the day. Only her love produces this fantastic photo blog that I love to scroll through every now and then.

So yummy looking!
And they're all great inspiration for future meals, breakfast or otherwise! Check out this one, sliced Avocado on toast with olive oil, salt and pepper.
Doesn't seem like breakfast, but I bet it's awesome.

Beautiful Blogs - Cannell et Vanille

As if the banner up there didn't make it clear, everything on this blog is light, pretty, and delicious. I just discovered it and added it to my follow list almost immediately.

I have to admit that I haven't sat still to read all the posts, and have mostly scanned down the page looking at the pictures. They're beautifully taken and most of them are of wonderful looking food! I mean, my eye was immediately caught by shots of Cherry Blossom Doughnuts! You can't get more Primavera/Ecstasia than that! They look delicious (i'm way too lazy to ever try to make them...) and the photos themselves are amazing.

Looking forward to following this blog. Really want to try this Arroz con Leche...
